I N S T A L L A T I O N0. You can always ask for help here: #Defrag@QuakeNet1. I don't have Quake III Arena game, what should I do ?a) Borrow Quake III Arena from a friend, you don't need a CD-KEY (#1)
b) Buy it at Steam (#2)
c) Use pak0 from Q3MIN, which is a substitue of the original game content. You can't play original Quake III Arena with it though, just mods.
2. Installing Quake 3 and DefragYou can either do this manually or use a tool called "
PRO Installer 2" (
Online Virus Scan)
The original quake installer will not work any longer so this is not an option!
If you choose to run the "
PRO Installer 2", follow these steps.
a) At first point it to the location of your pak0.pk3 file (that is the file with all the game content), depending on what source you use it might be:
On your Quake III Arena CD. It is in cddriveletter:\Quake3\baseq3\"
If you bought Quake III Arena via Steam, the default installation folder is:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake 3 arena\baseq3\"
If you have a Q3MIN pak0.pk3 file you'll need to point Pro Installer 2 to whatever path you unpacked it to.
b) In the second box you can select a custom location for installing Defrag
c) Click "3.Install" and wait for the installation to finish.
d) If you're into that kind of thing you can click the bunny icon at "6.Create a shortcut on you desktop".
If you do it manually, you'll need to:
a) Copy the contents of your q3 cd to your harddrive
b) Install the Point Release 1.32 Win32 / Linux. This is the lastest quake 3 patch.
c) Install the most recent version of Defrag mod. This goes as a subfolder into your Quake III Arena folder.
d) Run quake3.exe and start the mod Defrag. Alternatively, you can create a shortcut and add the line +set fs_game defrag in the properties. This loads Defrag automatically. Alternatively, you can download better version of quake3.exe called DFEngine with is made especially for Defrag mod and allows for automatic map downloads. It is recommended but not mandatory.(#3)
3. Create an account at http://www.q3df.org/registrationThis is needed to permanently log records into the database. If you wish to not create an account, people will not be able to compete with you.
4. Connect to a server The servers supported by the MDD database can be found here at
q3df.orgThen proceed as follows:
a) Run Defrag by double-clicking your shortcut (if you created any). Enter any CD-KEY(#1)
b) Open your console. The key for that is located under your escape key. Hit backspace twice. Type: \connect IP:PORT (eg: connect 78.47.229.115:27960). The server browser will work too but it is incredibly slow. You can use Game Scanner
c) If you miss defrag maps, you can find a huge collection of maps at the Q3A Map Archive. Download them into your Quake III Arena\baseq3 folder. Alternative versions of the Quake III Arena executable allow extra functionality. For example DFEngine allows for automatic map downloads. It is recommended but not mandatory.(#3)
d) When you're connected and entered the game, open the console type \login account password(remember to do the backspace thing), this will enter your times into the Database whenever you finish a run. \logout will ... log you out. Whenever you change servers you'll need to log in again.
e) start playing
(#1) A valid cdkey is required for playing online games with punkbuster. Defrag servers do not use punkbuster.
(#2) Steam actually provides a fully usable non-encrypted game. We generally do not endorse steam.
(#3) Another popular build is ioquake. It has many bugfixes and runs very stable. For other builds, use google.
