Huge delay in key presses (high ping)

I'm getting insanely high ping to European servers (I'm in the UK). When using the server broswer it's pinging way lower, like 20-40 (which is what I usually do get) but when I connect i'm getting 80-100. I really have no idea what's causing it, it's making my input so delayed that it's impossible to play online.

Any ideas?

I thought only weapons were affected by high ping?
I play on those servers with 150+ping and it's usually fine for strafe
