1. John Thurman: Invention in 1899

In 1899, John S.Thurman created his first vacuum cleaner that ran on gasoline. This first gasoline-powered cleaner was quite large and bulky. His device did not create a vacuum, but it blew the air to dislodge the dust and blow it into a container. His invention brought him good business from cleaner services. Who knows? 2. Hubert Cecil Booth: Invention in 1901

Hubert Cecil Booth, a British structural engineer was inspired by Thurman’s machine. He wanted to improve it. Basically, Booth’s invention was a reversing of Thurman's patent which was called the "Puffing Billy. However, Booth’s machine was not smaller than Thurman’s and was not preferred much by homeowners. That is the reason why it was used by cleaning services or installed in a building. It was not as modern as today’s robot vacuums. But at that time, this invention was remarkable for the cleaning service industry.

3. James Spangler: Invention in 1907

In 1907 James Spangler had a tough job. He was a janitor at a store. His hard work of removing dust off the floors and rugs was harsh for his asthma. It forced him to make something better. Finally, he was successful in creating a vacuum cleaner powered by electricity. Using a fan motor, he attached a box to a pillowcase for collecting the dust, Thus, James Spangler created the first portable electric vacuum cleaner. 4. William Henry Hoover

William Henry Hoover was Spangler’s cousin’s husband. After bought the vacuum machine from Spangler, he redesigned the vacuum by placing a steel box on the pillowcase and attached a hose. Hoover built a factory which produced vacuum cleaners and a become the founder and president of Hoover Company. Thanks to Spangler’s invention, Hoover has manufactured plenty of vacuums with various models and shapes. Till today, his products are among some of the top rated vacuum cleaner models in the world.

5. James Dyson: Invention in 1983

Previous inventors all attached an bag into their machine. With his “G-Force”, he Dyson created a revolution when turned from bagged vacuums to the bagless dual cyclone version. He tried to sell his invention to manufacturers, but they refused to buy it. Then Dyson built his own company to start his business in then cleaning industry which quickly started to produce bestselling products.

In the old days, the only way to clean carpets was to take them outside and beat them. Being a tough job, it was just performed for spring cleaning.
