Skyboxes

Postby Phoenix » Dec 19th, '10, 11:00 pm

Was wondering if anyone could help me or point me to a tutorial for how to make a skybox using free software or Photoshop since i have it already. The only tutorials I've found involve using programs like 3d studio or other software that you have to pay for.

I have the image I want to use I just need to make it into a skybox.

i heard somewhere that skyboxes are actually shots of 3d spaces from all 6 angles. dont know how effective a photoshopped skybox would be, but you could use blender for your 3d space. its open source and stuff, so its completely free...

im sure someone will prove everything i just said wrong and give you a good little tut :D
wtf i have a signature?

this is correct. find a map with a good nonbaseq3 skybox and have a look at the script and images. or download a skybox or lots of skyboxes here: http://lvlworld.com/review.php?id=2023 and have a look in their description and how-to-thingie. dont remember much about the creation itself though, other than that it might use alpha layers, which works perfectly in photoshop. and yes, you can create ur own images and steal a script from another skybox.

i took the liberty of taking that download and making 1 shader for all the skyboxes..

i couldn't attach a .shader file on the forums so i renamed to .txt, so just rename to .shader

http://www.sendspace.com/file/50ehgp .... skybox mod.... its pretty self-explanatory... extract to your quake3 folder, open q3.exe, load skyboxmod.. load any map of your choosing, go to spectator, place teh 'camera' in any spot(preferably the middle,) follow onscreen instructions, it will take 6 screenshots from where the came is.

tested on dm17, pretty cool and funny to have q3dm17 as a skybox lol.
